I sent out an end of the year appeal yesterday from here in Liberia. I was astonished to learn over this last weekend that two families that I dearly love and have known for some time have not had food for a week.
Then this exchange with my banker and treasured friend Jennifer:
Deborah,
I was laying in bed this morning at 4am and all I could think about was your Contrast email- no food in 2016. How do you help people (whom we do love) around the world who don't have food to eat? Sending love isn't enough. Sending a box of food isn't enough. Sending money isn't enough. I guess that's all there is to do. I read your email to Gretchen and we are compelled to help, and just not sure how. Even though I feel like my resources are limited, I feel fortunate every day for what my family has. I do want to help our human family. Can you connect us with a family there? It would be wonderful to begin a relationship and let people know we do care and we do want to help. Is it even possible to send a box of goods?
I am so grateful for you. Please give our love to your Liberian family. And Happy Thanksgiving to all.
Love,
Jennifer
Oh Jennifer – I am so happy to hear from you and Gretchen! Please let her know! The contrast is just too much…
Yes to everything! I can connect you to David and his family. I can bring something with me for them when I return here in January. In the meantime, I can pass them $100 now if you wish to donate that online so they immediately have a big bag of rice which will last about two months with money to spare for some vegetables or…
I just spoke with David. He will come to our office open house celebration on Saturday and bring his family – wife Marma who was abandoned with two girls who he took in. They have been together since 2008 and how have two additional girls. The girls are ages 1, 7, 10 and 12 –and they are all in school!
He is overcome with joy at your offer of connection. I will take a photo of the family and send to you this weekend. I would love for you to send me a photo of your family. David has an email address. We have offered to have him come here any time to use our internet instead of paying an internet café. I will make an email connection/introduction on Saturday to you. Also we will have him set up a skype account so you all can skype with each other eventually.
I have known David since 2008. He worked for the hotel where I live for many years until he got cancer and eventually was dismissed as he was unable to come back to work. He has not been able to find regular work since that time, now years ago. I have no idea how a family of 6 lives without work. He will borrow transport money to come Saturday and I will reimburse him.
JOY in Liberia today! Thank you for caring! And thank you for responding! I am so grateful! I truly just had one of the dearest conversations of my life…
Hugs of love and gratitude and joy,
Deborah
