Safe Conversations: The Language of Peace in Liberia
Liberia is a post-war, extremely fragile democracy and it is facing one of the most challenging chapters of its nearly 200 years of existence. The population has become more and more polarized and opportunities for advancement (personal and professional) seem vague and unattainable.
Foundation for Women (FFW) has provided micro-finance, health and housing and education support in Liberia since 2007 and have long sought the elusive “glue” that binds these services; a methodology or approach that will help rebuild Liberia’s culture through its most valued asset, its resilient, hopeful people.
Safe Conversations is that methodology. Founded by renowned American authors and relationship scientists, Harville Hendrix and Helen LaKelly Hunt, Safe Conversations is a step-by-step process for talking and listening that creates connection between people even when difference is dividing them. It is delivered in an interactive workshop for people no matter their literacy rate or level, their role or relationship. It is an empowering skillset that will elevate people professionally and educationally.
FFW has committed to bring Safe Conversations to Liberia. Since 2020 we have offered workshops across the country, in urban and rural communities, with adults and youth. These workshops have been transformative. Let us tell you more.

About Safe Conversations
Safe Conversations is a new way of talking without criticizing, and listening without judgement. A learning process that helps people whose cultural and habitual orientation is toward polarizing, often angry interaction. Safe Conversations allows people to approach their relationships with curiosity and interest, so they can connect beyond what divides them.
Safe Conversations is a 3-step Dialogue process supported by environmental/cultural tools (the practices of Zero Negativity and Affirmations) which make this more than just a “talking and listening” methodology. Safe Conversations is a community-building implementation, a healing tool, and a path to connection when such a thing might seem impossible (or at the very least, time consuming!)

How Safe Conversations Can Impact your Community
Safe Conversations is offered as a live, interactive workshop. FFW has invested in training a team of cross-functional workshop facilitators. Our goal is to partner with schools, communities of worship and wellbeing, government agencies and NGOs to help build a common language for peace.
Your community members will receive:
- 3 hours of Safe Conversations instruction with support materials to use at home or work
- Opportunity to practice – transformation happens when the process is experienced first-hand
- Follow up session(s) to reenforce and reinspire
Safe Conversations will Transform our Beloved Liberia
Safe Conversations is being introduced worldwide as a methodology for connection. We have seen how the practices of Zero Negativity and Dialogue have refocused even the most hardened relationships, from obstruction to cooperation. Liberia needs this more now than ever.
