Our FFW 23rd Birthday Celebration was BEYOND FABULOUS as we say in Liberia! Such a joy to celebrate 23 years of service to humanity all over the globe. Together we have positively impacted the lives of more than 23 million people from India, to San Diego, to Zambia and South Africa and Niger, and since 2007 we have been operating a microfinance program in Liberia. Amazing!
On April 23, 1998 our founding board members hosted our first gathering at the La Jolla Woman’s Club. We were amazed when more than 200 women showed up to learn about our new organization and our commitment to “connection and service.” And since that first program, we have gathered in community all over the globe – lots of us doing a little together vs a few doing a lot has resulted in dramatic social change for so many of our one human family.
Our celebration on April 23rd was emceed by Moses Juah, Deborah’s "son" since they first met in Liberia on Christmas Day 2006. Deborah had just landed in the country and attended a Christmas Party for children who had nothing to do that day. Moses was one of the 250 children in attendance – she and Moses have been connected ever since. "A God-thing" as Moses says. Moses was 9 years old at the time, had never been to school, was selling water in plastic bags on the street to support his illiterate family. He has just now completed his second year of college at Gannon University in Erie, PA and is a star student – one of the millions of lives that have changed due to the Foundation for Women. The 23th Birthday Celebration was attended by so many from across the US, Canada, and Africa – truly a one global human family affair! Many of our partners in our collective impact commitment were in attendance and spoke of the impact of our work. Please click the link here to view the joy! Our long-time friend and supporter Ann Lovell put an amazing gift on the table - $50,000 to establish an endowment to ensure the sustainability of the Foundation for Women long into the future and far beyond those of us who founded this work. Our goal is to raise at minimum $500,000. With all of us doing a little vs a few doing a lot, we are committed to reaching our goal in the next few months! We would love to have you join this effort! In keeping with this commitment, we recently formalized a partnership with Habitat for Humanity International, the most noted expert in housing help globally. Habitat sought a partner in Liberia to help them bring their housing expertise to this country after leaving decades ago due to the unprecedented civil war. Of all possible partners, Habitat chose the Foundation for Women – a tremendous testimony to the quality of work we do and are known for in Liberia. Affordable safe housing is a huge challenge in this country of 5 million people, the majority of whom live well below the global poverty level of $2/day. The Foundation for Women has been helping this population since 2006 with individual microfinance and business support, with financial and business support to low-fee independent schools, and with financial and business support to independent community health clinics. By adding this 4th pillar of service, FFW will help women and their families with all aspects of their lives – business, education, healthcare, and now housing. We are excited to now offer this 4th level of support to the families of Liberia.

Nothing about this year has been normal. As Americans, we have experienced upheaval and challenges beyond anything in recent human history. The global pandemic has changed the way we live and work and has disproportionately impacted millions of vulnerable people. Our country’s painful but necessary reckoning with the scourge of systemic racism has laid bare the changes we must make, long overdue, as citizens and as a country. These existential challenges remind me of the harrowing impact of the Ebola outbreak in 2015, when life as we knew it ended. For Liberians, the pain and trauma of 2020 echo in profound ways. In Liberia, we have a deep well of resilience – and the mission and work of the Foundation for Women is the living, breathing embodiment of this resilience, every day.

Fire disaster in July - Hospital rebuilt by October. Thank you Foundation for Women friends and supporters! Your contributions and support help make this possible. We're so grateful for our FFW community! Check out this article from the Daily Observer in Liberia about Benson Hospital and FFW partnering for community clinics and the fire : https://www.liberianobserver.com/news/ffw-partnering-with-benson-hospital-to-open-community-clinic/  The Founder and CEO of the Foundation for Women, Ms. Deborah Lindholm, upon learning of the fire that destroyed the top floor of the Benson Hospital, made a commitment to raise fund for the restoration work at the hospital. Today, she wants to make good on her commitment by presenting a check of Thirteen Thousands United States Dollars (US$13,000.00). In fact, this is the second donation towards this renovation exercise. Earlier this month, while the Benson's were in the United States, Deborah made an initial donation of US$7,000.00.
With this presentation of $13,000.00 today, the Foundation for Women is pleased to announce that US$20,000.00 in total has been raised and turned over to the Benson Hospital to be used for the renovation work at the Hospital.  On this special day we want to officially announce the formation of the "Deborah & Florence Education Fund for Girls" which was birthed at the end of 2017 by a generous gift from long-time supporter and board member Janie Davis. Janie has two grandsons for whom she is arranging funding for their education. When we were together a few months ago, Janie expressed the desire to do something for girls as well as boys. She provided the initial gift which the Foundation for Women matched - so we now have $2000 in the account which we hope will grow to fund not just post-high school education for Deborah and Florence, but for many, many girls. Globally the world celebrates International Women's Day today. The Foundation for Women acknowledges today as it has for the last two decades. From India to Africa to San Diego to now Liberia, we have been blessed and honored to celebrate and support more than a million women and their families all over the globe. And there is so much more to come! It has been an amazing and blessed journey so far. As we embark on our third decade of service, we are committed more than ever to the knowing that we are indeed one human family, that we need to be present for and support each other. The Foundation for Women has been a bridge between those of us in the 20% of the population that share more than 90% of the wealth and the 20% of the population that shares less than 1% of the wealth.
