Monrovia - I awoke early this morning but stayed covered and quiet, reviewing and reflecting on my two weeks here now. I am blessed that God urged me to regularly write and document all that has happened here in Liberia since July. I was particularly reviewing my time at Benson Hospital yesterday, thinking of the hundreds of health care workers who continually tried to help those suffering so much… The images of the hospital yesterday haunt me; the faces of those waiting for help, the enthusiasm and pride of the workers despite the most challenging conditions. I can only imagine what it all must have been like in the height of the crisis.
Then I opened my computer to review messages from America as I do every morning before going to the gym. And there in my inbox was the most extraordinary message I have ever received regarding my work in Liberia – from Dr. Benson – addressed to me and her niece in the US:
“My dearest Deborah & Iyabo,
I am lost for words of praise and admiration for you Deborah for all you do and for your love and passion for humanity, for the people of Liberia and for women who have nothing. You are so special! Where others are running away, you are running to it to help make some weary soul smile and have something to eat!
You are beautiful inside and outside!! You make things happen and make all the difference in the lives of so many women here in Liberia and around many other countries! You are unique and so creative!
Thank you so much for coming to Benson Hospital this morning and for bringing that glow and spice to Benson! All the health workers as well as patients were smiling when they saw you today. There has to be something captivating and magical about you as the whole Hospital became more alive at your visit! I really appreciate you Deborah!!
Thanks a million for everything!! And to think that you have been coming to Liberia for several years and even to my Rotary Club of Sinkor and we never met until my niece – just like a sister introduced us. This must be God’s time for us to meet and it is the BEST!!”
I humbly replied to say I was simply reflecting back to her and her team all the love and joy I was receiving from them, which is the truth! It was a life-changing experience being with them. I will forever remember Dr. Benson’s love and dedication as we checked on so many of her patients. “How you coming on?” she would inquire; “Trying, small small,” was the usual reply.
How did I ever get so blessed to be able to be here at this moment? It never would have been possible without all of you and your unwavering support. Tremendous tears of joy and gratitude ~ Deborah
