Today it is clear that God’s hand was in place and directing all; a new direction and new leadership were essential. Instead of heading for certain dissolution of the organization, we are thriving in Liberia! Two and a half years ago, our partnership with Edify in support of providing microfinance to low fee independent schools (LFIS) was birthed. Despite months of havoc due to the Ebola crisis, the program is a huge success and growing daily. We have more than 60 partner schools, touching thousands of children in Liberia by improving their schools. We add 5-6 new partner schools every month so we will have more than 100 soon; a remarkable accomplishment despite such challenges here.
And there is more good news! Last Thursday we had a major skype call with the Borlaug Institute at Texas A&M University, specialists in agriculture in the developing world. They have agreed to help us make Liberia food-sufficient and help us develop a cash crop that will bring much needed capital into the country. We are certain we can use our FFW grassroots women’s network of 250 communities in this project.
And then there is solar! The microfinance model of village mobile phone ladies is now village solar energy ladies. This has been done successfully in India. It is time to bring it to Liberia!
As 2016 begins, despite the global economic and political uncertainty, we are very positive about all that is happening at the Foundation for Women Liberia and our efforts at nation-building. None of this would be possible without your continued support and commitment – thank you!
With love and gratitude from Liberia ~ Deborah
