Letters from Liberia

Friday, July 1, 2016 Monrovia, Liberia

This is a very historic day in Liberia.  It has been 13 years since the UN Mission in Liberia UNMIL began operations to keep peace in this country after more than 14 years of senseless civil war that destroyed everything.  Former President Charles Taylor has been convicted in the Hague of war crimes against humanity, and is pray-fully living out the rest of his life in custody.  Peace has been in place here since the UN came in 2003.  Yesterday UNMIL turned over security in this country to the Liberian government; it is a time of wonderment by everyone here…

The monsoon rains are early and heavy now.  The one and only road to and from the international airport is flooded and closed.  As my dear friend and colleague, our FFWL COO David Beyan says, “There are no emergency services to help.”  So true.  It is a very tenuous time in Liberia in so many ways – the security change and President Ellen’s administration ending and politics for the next phase of government which will be determined in November 2017 and…

I am writing this from my Liberian home, with my treasured Liberian family around me at the RLJ Kendeja which has been my housing here since their opening in 2008.  I am so acutely aware of the contrasts of my two beyond special homes – this here which I love and treasure more than I can say and at the opposite end of the spectrum my home in La Jolla which I appreciate.  While in conversation today with a young Liberian woman living in America who is returning here next month, the two spots are indeed on the farthest extremes of possible reality.  And yet as I said today to those here and in America, if I had to choose between the two, I would choose Liberia without question!

Here in Africa, there is family, there is love, there is UBUNTU – please google the concept.  May we all one day experience that…  may we one day realize that we are indeed one human family – and realize that we must love each other, support each other, hold hands with each other…

As I write this there is yet another terrorist attack, now Bangladesh… the news every day in our new normal now…  heart-breaking is every way..

It is not time to build walls but to build bridges – as we are truly one human family…  may we awaken to that reality…

With love and gratitude from Liberia,

“Faith is our assurance that there is a Divine plan of infinite love at work even in the most challenging moments, and that we are a part of that plan.  Faith gives us the confidence to move ahead with vast visions in the face of enormous odds; it is an invitation to work in active partnership with the Divine in service of a better world.” - Women, Spirituality and Transformative Leadership
