Letters from Liberia: International Women’s Day

My heart is bursting with joy! A Sunday with friends and family in Liberia! A beautiful day by the sea which began with a good night’s rest for the first time in longer than I can remember. Then quiet prayer and meditation and review of my gratitude list, most especially for waking up in my Villa #1005 in Liberia, home here for years.
Then tea and preparation for a day of welcoming and greeting friends, dear friends I have not seen for too long. They began coming early afternoon in one group after another. Dear friend Dorbor who has been the chief logistical manager for Liberia’s Ebola response effort – oh what a life he has led the last nine+ months and is still leading until complete eradication is achieved. I learned so much from him today, things never known to the world outside of this country regarding this ebola crisis. And his wife Massah shared about their family life and how she demanded Dorbor to strip and get into a chlorinated bath the minute he returned each day… unimaginable tales of survival… And so much hope! Zero ebola cases now in the country thanks to Dorbor’s and others’ leadership here! Liberia is offering help and support to Guinea and Sierra Leone after being the most affected country with the highest number of cases and deaths – now a consultant to Sierra Leone and Guinea on how to end this awful virus. So inspiring.

The afternoon ended with the bride and groom from yesterday, dear friends Arthur and Amelia Tamba, coming with their daughter my namesake Deborah and her sister Florence and cousins. It was a beyond special reunion and discussion after the “occasion” as they say here in Liberia yesterday. My help to them is small in comparison to the joy they all bring to me.

Oh how I wish I could bring the entire circle of friends in my life here to Liberia for a brief time – to meet those I love – to meet this part of our human family – to feel the love and joy I am knowing this moment… I am convinced world conflict would crease if we only knew each other. When some of us are not OK, none of us are OK; will we one day understand that?

I met with my hired videographer/reporter Henry today. I am here only for a brief time to document and investigate and gather the real story of this country who knows and loves it well. We have a mission and purpose and are committed to sharing the story of those whose stories are not heard…

With so much love and gratitude from Liberia ~ Deborah
