Letters from Liberia

Friday, June 2, 2017 Monrovia, Liberia

It has been too long since I have contributed to this blog.  For so many unbelievable reasons…  Tonight I must write as I am a witness to the political reality in America and its reverberating affect here in Africa. The US, my country of birth but perhaps no longer my country of choice, has joined Syria and Nicaragua in not supporting the Paris Climate Agreement.  My heart is broken.  I have known my entire life that we are indeed “one human family” – that we are all connected and that we all need each other.  The geopolitical boundaries are just that – geopolitical boundaries – not human family boundaries.

Today here in Liberia, we welcomed my University of San Diego Kroc School of Peace & Justice mentee Patricia Wakhusama from Kenya.  Patricia and I are connected since her first master’s program year – now this internship with the Foundation for Women Liberia – then her second and final year.  I sat at a table today with our wonderful Foundation for Women Liberian team welcoming her and thought – despite the unenlightened behavior of our current US leadership, we are indeed one human family and we will continue to do good – do great – at the grassroots level.  We will not be deterred.  We will continue to believe that goodness will prevail.

So who am I believing in and supporting at this moment – the current temporary administration of the US, a president who is crying for help and healing and so needing our prayers, or Patricia and our grassroots’ goodness which is happening every moment here Liberia?  There is no choice.

With great gratitude for all of you who have supported our work for decades now – holding hands with love and gratitude forever,

“Faith is our assurance that there is a Divine plan of infinite love at work even in the most challenging moments, and that we are a part of that plan.  Faith gives us the confidence to move ahead with vast visions in the face of enormous odds; it is an invitation to work in active partnership with the Divine in service of a better world.” - Women, Spirituality and Transformative Leadership
