Letters from Liberia: A Visit with His Excellency the Vice President of Liberia Joseph Boakai

Monrovia, Liberia - My great thanks to Diane Bell for sharing my thoughts from Liberia with San Diego, and hopefully beyond in America! Another day of extreme emotion here in Liberia – great joy and celebration and great grief and heartbreak. The film crew and I reviewed our first week for hours today. Powerful. Henry and Armah have captured so much, documented so much. They are my heroes, a gift from God to help me tell the story I am so blessed to share…
After so many dear connections today, I was blessed to spend several hours with His Excellency the Vice President of Liberia Joseph Boakai, a dear and treasured friend, at his residence this evening. There is so much to say about this man and our time together; for now I share a poem of his:

WHAT A RELATIONSHIP!
Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone
Have entered into a strange relationship
With a wicked lady, “Ebola”
She is cunny, comes first as malaria
And later shows her true face
She chooses three exact weeks
To show her true colors
Runny stomach, bloody nose
And throwing out in disgrace with skin rupture
She has literally misinterpreted God’s intent
For marriage – till death do us part
She makes sure you go together
She is not easy to divorce
Don’t go to church, she kills the Pastor
Go to the Doctor and make sure you don’t negotiate
Get rid of her at all cost
By Joseph N. Boakai, Sr.

I am in awe of this man, my now decade-long friend, and his spirit, and his survival and the survival of his country despite so much unprecedented tragedy, now for too long…

He corrected me tonight as his life-friend David and I were leaving. When I thanked him for letting me be of service to him and his country for so long, he replied, “This is our country.” Yes indeed Sir, this is our country, our world, our human family.

With love and gratitude from Liberia ~ Deborah
